Having been taught as a child that it was wrong to leave animals to suffer, I took him to the house with no other intention than to see that he was humanely put out of his misery. Rather than the end of the big dog’s adventures, it was only the beginning. Fate had brought us together, destiny was determined to keep us that way. I kept thinking I had sent him away for the last time, but Big kept finding his way back. Even when his journey took him hundreds of miles away, somehow he always ended up at our little house in the woods. He started out as “that big dog.” He became “the Big Dog.” There couldn’t be a more appropriate name, for a Big Dog, with a Big Personality.

The big ugly dog had been abandoned and shot. Nearing the end, he crawled off into the woods to die. That is where I found him. Big’s adventures continue in this second instalment of The Big Dog Diaries. Follow Big and his friends through one Winter in Tennessee, where Big continues to train his people for their races and brings some new friends out onto the roads. Big’s trust in Laz is put to the ultimate test one Saturday morning when both their lives are put in danger during one of their walks.

Lazarus Lake continues to record and share Big’s stories, much to the delight of the ultra-running community around the world. They live on a farm in Tennessee where they train and organise popular races for an international community that Laz has been a part of for over 4 decades and Big first joined a couple of years ago.

About Big Tails: Big Dog Diaries

The Big Dog Diaries started as a non-ultra-content post to the ultralist, where Lazarus Lake just needed to let off some steam and describe the rough emotional patch he was going through after finding a pit bull that had been shot and abandoned near his property. After the ultra-list helped cover the veterinary bills, Laz tried to bring the Big Dog back to a health and find a permanent home for him. My Name is Big is a compilation of Big’s story through growing healthy again, finding a new “permanent” home only to be abandoned again, and finally to being fully accepted as part of a new family.  The journey chronicled here is Big’s first year and a half in his new life. 

Big Adventures takes off where My Name is Big left off, covering about half a year of Big’s life as he trains his athletes for their ultra marathons and finds himself caught in a life and death situation when he’s set on by a half dozen other dogs. Big Tails is the upcoming third chapter of Big’s life and will be hitting shelves soon.
